And You Thought it Snowed a Lot this Winter? Not as Much as 1888.

In 1888, no one had radar or weather forecasts. Nothing told families spread out across the prairie that weather would be turning for the worse or if precipitation was incoming. On January 12, 1888, the northern plains of Minnesota, Dakotas and Nebraska experienced unseasonably warm weather.

People flocked outside to work on outdoor projects after months of chilling winter weather. Children walked to school without heavy coats, hats or mittens.

You’ll have to read The Children’s Blizzard by David Laskin to learn more of the details of one of the greatest weather events in history. It’s well worth the read.
